Recommended Rap Microphones

Before I give recommendations for each skill level of rapper, I wanted to give you a quick breakdown of the different types of rap microphones. There’s generally two types of mic’s you’re going to be choosing between. 

There is the XLR mic, which cannot plug directly into your computer but has a better quality sound. (Requires Audio Interface so mic can speak to laptop).

And there is the USB mic which plugs right into your laptop, but loses sound quality on your vocal recording. 

Mics for High-level and Advanced Rappers

The 3 mics I’m recommending for this category are 3 mics that are the most popular among rappers at the top of the game. I’ve personally used all of these mics and only recommend equipment that I wholeheartedly believe in myself.

Shure SM7B

Reddit’s Favourite Mic AT2020

A solid, and highly-rated mic that allows for serious sound quality once you’ve developed good recording and mixing technique. Grab this fantastic mic here on Amazon.

STELLAR X2

This Mic is a new favorite of mine and is just a really great, solid vocal performer. I call it the multi-tool mic in my studio because it is very versatile. I would definitely not use this mic until you’re able to maximize your sound treatments. Grab one here on Amazon.

Mics for Intermediate Artists

Here we have a mix of XLR condenser microphones and USB-microphones for rap. USB microphones get thrown aside a lot. But in 2020 there are some good options for the intermediate artists who need that mobility. 

RODE NT1-A KIT

Mics for Beginners

Beginner rappers – I love giving good recommendations to beginners because the learning curve is kind of weird when you first start. With different types of mics, filters, styles, and patterns, understanding what you need when you first start is REALLY important, and could possibly make or break a new artist.

If a new rapper has a really bad experience because they’re using mics that are too hard to use, you might not ever try to rap again. When you’re new, you just need one decent mic and a computer. After you have some fun and start to enjoy the recording process, then you can start getting into the technical aspects of the art. My goal is to show beginners exactly what they need.

AT2020+ USB Microphone 

As a new rapper, you really shouldn’t start with an XLR and audio interface, because there is a larger barrier to entry to get a good quality sound. I started with a USB microphone specifically because I didn’t have the funds to get the better quality options. And I could plug this one right into my computer. MXL 770 

An extremely versatile mic for rap vocals. This is on the less expensive and budget end, however you can get some quality sound with some quality mixing and mastering. But the MXL770 is the only choice for rap mics under 100, if you want an above average sound. You can get this mic here on Amazon.
